Pony Express Territory, Nevada

Open Range, endless views, artemether-carpeted valleys and picturesque mining towns, few places capture the experience and the Pony Express Nevada Territory. The area extends in the middle of Nevada, straddling U.S. Highway 50th The name reflects the fact that the U.S. Highway 50 parallels the historic Pony Express route, which stretched from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, Calif., in 1860.

It is a region with one foot in the 19th Century planted and theothers in the 21 Century. Only a handful of small towns are on the road, which was located by Life Magazine as "the lonely road in America called." And maybe it is. Motorists can receive the torment of loneliness when they are surrounded by buildings and transport, isolated feel. But the rest will find splendid isolation in peace.

Pony Express Territory is a land of natural wonders and fascinating wild mountain towns looking much as it has for over a centurybefore. Travel from East to West, should be your first stop on U.S. Highway 50 at the Great Basin National Park, home of the ancient bristlecone pines. This perverse giants that grow only at altitudes over 10,000 feet, can be old for up to 4,000 years. The park has trails also lead to the lakes and majestic peaks, including 13.063 foot Wheeler Peak, the second highest alpine point in Nevada.

Lehman Caves, which is accessible through the visitor center of the park, offers a fantastic showStalactites and stalagmites developed over hundreds of years. The small town of Baker, is located five miles east of the park, offers restaurants, a motel and a gas station.

About an hour northwest of the park is Ely, a former mining town that used copper is an ideal starting point for excursions to the areas many historical sites and recreation areas. The town has numerous restaurants, hotels and RV spaces, and wall paintings, the story bring the city to life.

The Nevada Northern Railway Museum inEly includes railway stations, shops and rail Northern Nevada, a short line that operated from 1906 until beginning of 1980.

The East Ely renovated Train Depot houses a small museum and souvenir shop. But the highlight of a tour stop on "The Ghost Train of Old Ely." On weekends and selected times are trips by train at the Railway Museum No. 40, offered in a 1910 Baldwin steam locomotive, or its sister engine, number 93, an American group in 1909Steam engine. Train enthusiasts can themselves become designers and actually drive both steam and diesel locomotive traveling 14 miles in a mountain canyon.

Seventy eight miles west of Ely and Eureka, one of the best-preserved nineteenth-century mining town of Nevada. Founded in 1864, Eureka has many of its original buildings, some of which have been carefully restored. Most impressive is the Eureka courthouse, which opened in 1880. On the opposite side of the street is the Eureka OperaHouse, built in 1880, which was in a modern facility and convention center of cultural power restored. The well-preserved Eureka Sentinel Museum offers displays of local history and features much of the equipment used to produce paper of the city, which was published 1870-1960.

Follow Austin, once a field of the production of Nevada's most successful. Silver was discovered here in 1862 and in a few years, Austin was the second largest town in the state. OfParticularly noteworthy are the historic cities in three churches: St. Augustine Catholic Church, built in 1866, the Methodist Church, built in 1866, and St. George's Episcopal Church, built in 1878. Austin and surrounding Toiyabe, and Hot Creek ranges Toquima are places frequented by mountain bikers looking for a blue sky, jagged landscape and the lack of crowds.

Between Austin and Fallon, Sand Mountain is a unique two miles long, 600 feet high sand dunes that appeals to sandBuggy enthusiasts, cyclists and skiers dirty sand. The Sand Mountain Pony Express Station, south of the dune, is one of the best preserved examples of the type of housing rough rock Pony Express riders used.

West on U.S. Highway 50 Grimes Point Archaeological Site. Interpretive signs guide visitors along a path lined with Petro-glyphs, the rock paintings of indigenous peoples that inhabited the area produced between 5000 BC and 1500 AD.

Twelve miles west of Fallon is known forMelon and combat aircraft. Fallon awarded Hearts O'Gold melons are one of the leading products of this rich agricultural land. It is also the headquarters of the U.S. Navy "Top Gun" flight school. Combat aircraft are often seen practicing maneuvers in the skies above the village. Both areas are state parks.

My Wife in Bangkok: A Romantic Guide to the City Review

Mr. Merry shows the Thai sex industry as being the best economic option for some Thai women to earn money to educate their children and care for their aging parents. We in the west have our negative moral judgements about women who work in the sex industry. In my opinion, the author's study of Rinzai Zen allowed him to see the lives of the women working in the sex industry with clarity instead of projecting misplaced morality. By living in the slums of Bangkok, the author practices true participatory journalism rather than armchair academics.

Unreadable - Owen Fenby - San Francisco
Behold, proof that anyone can get published in these days of vanity publishing. What a mess. The book looks like it was written and designed in one day; full of typos, mixed tenses, while void of any meaning or direction. And while the author should be applauded for his candor, he still comes off as a cheap farang utterly lacking a soul. Also, for a guy who claims to be a photojournalist, he shows absolutely no talent for either writing or photography. But the most laughable part is the bio on the back cover, where he claims to have studied Rinzai Zen for ten years. Give me a break. If someone can pursue enlightenment for that long and still willingly support the Thai sex industry, then I humbly suggest the lessons didn't take.

Why farang deserve to be despised... - Millarca -
Despite the cover and author's claims otherwise, this is NOT a piece of photojournalism. It is merely a sick attempt to explain away and justify the selfish abuse and misuse of a Thai woman. It's people like O'Merry that allow prostitution to thrive and aid in the slow development of rights and opportunities for Thai women.

Not exactly a romantic guide to Bangkok - Michael - New York
This book portrays mostly just one aspect of life in Bangkok, the sex industry. Some may agree with part of the title of this book "A Romantic Guide to the City", others may not. Rory (the author) calls his significant other his "wife", but also pays money to other women for sex. Although it is a fairly accurate portrayal of the nightlife & sex industry in Bangkok, it does not go too far beyond that. It does however touch on some of the cultural differences between Thai society & the western world such as more emphasis on certain values in a relationship with a Thai woman.

The book is 184 pages but could be read in one day, it is quick reading. The author is NOT an extraordinary writer. This book is somewhat written in a diary style. Parts of the book flow together while other parts seem like just quick excerpts from one day that start on something but leads nowhere. Putting these faults aside, I still enjoyed reading this book & found it pretty interesting. I also found myself reminiscing about certain parts of my holiday to Bangkok in 1998 while reading it. I do recommend this book to anyone who has been or is planning on going to Thailand & enjoys the nightlife.

One Week on Koh Samet: A traveler's Journal (Thailand Travel Kit) Overview

Unlike Thailand Travel Kit by Jack B. Wily, this book is in journal form. It was written day by day throughout a one week trip to Samet Island. The author has been to Samet Island about fifteen times. It was written in a notebook on the porch of a hut in between hikes and swimming on a great beach. Then it was typed up in Bangsaen, Thailand. The author has spent eight years in the country. Jack also writes fiction, this journal is an informal record of a trip to one of the main islands of Thailand. A worthwhile read for anyone heading towards one of the most popular islands in the country -- Koh Samet. The island has a personality of its own. Less developed, more relaxed than some of the other islands. The book tells of a beach that is uncrowded and peaceful and in the author's opinion one of the best beaches in Thailand.

The largest state of India, Rajasthan is the land of colourful festivals, intoxicating cultural practices, folklores of courtly love and audacious princes, but above all it is the land of stunning palaces and forts. A Rajasthan tour always comes with a visit to some of the finest pieces of architectures erected by its erstwhile Rajputana and Mughal rulers.

History has it Rajasthan has long been a dynasty of mightiest of rulers who found their perfect base here. The brave warrior clan of Rajputs were great lovers of architecture and fashioned various stunning residences of their rulers in the state. The fall of Rajputs didn't affect the growing architectural splendour, but was rather enhanced further with the rise of Mughals. Mughals were great connoisseurs of art and they bestowed their state with awe inspiring fortifications and citadels. These edifices have withstood testimony of time and continue to sing the saga of Mughal majesty.

Here's a list of best of the palace and fort structures in the region which are an absolute must for those enjoying tours to Rajasthan.

Mehrangarh Fort

Situated at a lofty height, Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur dazzles all eyes as the giant fort is visible from even far-flung distances in the region. This imposing edifice is enclosed by thick walls is inside carved with intricate designs. Thus an essential part of all Rajasthan tours these palaces and forts are ideal for rendezvous with the royal past of the country.

Some Thai Girls Aren't Girls

Anyone who has ever visited Thailand will know about the beauty of Thai women. In their twenties, they are striking. In their thirties, they are looking more mature, but still most are very attractive.

The women working in the ubiquitous bars and massage parlors of Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket are mostly former housewives, believe it or not, married but separated, with two kids they left back in their village with their mothers. Most are from Isaan, the North-East corner of Thailand, which has a large amount of poverty. Some are from other parts of the country, especially Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, and a very few are from Bangkok or central Thailand.

But about 1 in 100 is not a female at all, but a "ladyboy", or katoey in Thai. Quite often, they appear more feminine than the real women. I have seen many a farang ogle and lust after a very sexy woman, not realizing that "she" is a "he".

Like the women, most ladyboys are from Isaan. I have talked to a few on a one to one basis, and asked them when they first knew they wanted to be a female. All said they knew at an early age, around 5 or 6 years old. They said they liked the female manner, didn't like rough sports, were partial to art and music.

Katoeys are an accepted part of Thai culture, considered to be a third sex in Thailand. Several are movie stars and TV announcers. One is a national kick-boxing champion. You will find ladyboys everywhere, working as waiters, store clerks, hairdressers, couriers, etc.

In North America and Europe, a sex-change (also called a gender re-assignment) operation is considered to be a big deal, requiring many months of psychological counseling before the operation to make sure the person is committed to the change.

In Thailand, a sex change operation is quite common. There are several clinics and hospitals which perform it, and the cost is a fraction of what the western charge would be, typically US$5000-7000. Nevertheless, for a poor person from Isaan, $5000 is a huge amount of money.

There are three main areas in Bangkok where ladyboys are present in large numbers: Nana Entertainment Plaza (on Sukhumvit Soi 4), Patpong Road (off Silom), and Soi Cowboy (close to the intersection of Sukhumvit Road and Asoke Road, which has both BTS SkyTrain and MRT Subway stations).

At Nana, the majority of ladyboys are "pre-op", meaning they still have a penis. At Patpong and Soi Cowboy, most are "post-op", meaning they have had the operation to create a vagina. The operation involves cutting out a section of intestine, which will become the vagina. The penis is cut open and inserted into the intestinal tube; typically some of the scrotal sac is used to increase the length of the new vagina. The tip of the penis becomes the new clitoris, and is normally still sensitive after the procedure is finished and everything has healed. The ladyboys I talked to said they could still have an orgasm, but did not ejaculate.

Scar tissue is visible if the post-op ladyboy retains his/her public hair, but if it is shaved off, it is difficult to tell an artificially created vagina from the real thing.

However, this is typically not the end of the story in sex reassignment. The male body is typically larger than the female, even in Thailand, where many people seem to be 80% the size of western people. The ladyboy has to take hormones for a couple of years before the operation; these hormones help him grow breasts and reduce his facial and body hair growth. Thai men don't usually have much body hair, compared to Western men, but they do have some; hormones or another treatment are needed to reduce or eliminate it. However, hormones have a side effect of reducing the ability to ejaculate.

Males typically have a protruding Adam's apple, so that is yet another operation: it can be shaved by a surgeon to reduce or eliminate the protrusion. And many have electrolysis to eliminate body hair, especially in the armpits.

If you visit Nana Entertainment Plaza after 7PM (which is when it opens), you will find several hair-dressing establishments located on the decks that run around three sides of the structure. The ones at the front cater to the bar girls; the ones at the rear cater to ladyboys. You can watch some of the ladyboys preening and preparing their makeup.

Some of the bars are exclusively ladyboys. If you enter one such bar, you will find that most ladyboys are more than passable and some are strikingly beautiful. I don't think I have ever seen an ugly ladyboy.

As far as relationships go, ladyboys are just like Thai women. They want a long-term relationship, and they will try hard to make the relationship work. Many speak some English, but you really need a product like Speak Easy Thai to help you learn some basic Thai vocabulary. If you can communicate better, you have a much better chance of a lasting relationship.

A part of Bangkok's nightlife that should not be missed by any visitor, ladyboy cabaret shows are professionally done, with spectacular productions (lots of feathers and glitter, good music, and some comedy as well). You can see them at the Calypso Cabaret (Asia Hotel, Ratchathewi SkyTrain station), Golden Dome Cabaret (15 minute walk from Sutthisan subway station), and Mambo Cabaret in the former Washington Theater between Sukhumvit Soi 22 and 24.

If you are a resident or visitor, everyone loves New York. The beauty and vitality are unparalleled, and Manhattan is everything you thought it would be, and much more!

I live in Manhattan, and as I'm sure you can imagine, I researched and took as much of this area is amazing that I could. The enormity of New York, makes it impossible to correct a part of it. How do you try, there is only time.

These are my favorite piecesManhattan, New York When you arrive, you do not want to see this beautiful city through my eyes, through a tourist brochure. Trust me, like you!

One of my favorite areas is the amazing East Village. This is where I spend my evenings in pubs and wonderful restaurants.

If you want to buy clothes, take a drink, or choose from a variety of food styles, the East Village is the place for you. Geared to the younger age group of twenties and thirties,This square mile is busy, lively and very cosmopolitan. The boundaries of the Lower East Side is on the ground and is very easy to switch from one to another without realizing it.

If you are looking for somewhere that is objective, especially outside the age range of the East Village, head of the West Village. The trees that complement the sidewalks outside the shops and cafes line the main attraction of this area. If you want a lively atmosphere combined with beautiful scenery, this is the right place for you.

Athe most beautiful city in the wonderful Central Park residents in the area known as West Side, this combines everything you would expect from Manhattan, style and elegance.

I hope I have in you, what a great place to Manhattan, and no trip to New York complete without a visit to this beautiful city. Oh, there are more, believe me, but only for today!

Check Out Thailand, 6th (Footprint - Travel Guides) for $21.58

Thailand, 6th (Footprint - Travel Guides) Review

I took this book with me on my trip to Thailand and I was glad I did. Its tone is much less that of the wannabe-hipster and more of the seasoned realist. To me, that was very fitting for this country in particular.

Much of the subjective criticism within the book was accurate and helpful, such as the honest appraisal of Chiang Mai's night bazaar. Even better were the excellent essays on a the dizzying array of Thai history and culture. They perfectly enhanced what I witnessed firsthand and were not overbearing; I never felt as though I was being spoonfed conclusions.

My only issue is with some of the things that were left out or glossed over. Two cases in point: A person should be aware that cons and criminal activity go on ALL OVER Bangkok. I caught a kid trying to pickpocket me on the Skytrain and it was not a pretty scene. That is a very serious crime and could have really ruined my trip -- so I think in any guide to Thailand this issue needs to be made crystal clear and more attention needs to be given to precautionary measures a traveller can take. Also, although this guide just tells you to casually "bargain" with vendors, one should be aware that the process is not always a smooth one no matter how polite or respectful you are. Most Thais that I encountered were surly when I started bargaining with them and acted quite rude. This is ofcourse all part of the give and take but it is not particularly a fun-filled experience as so many guidebooks would have you believe. You have to be really aggressive and yet finesse the deal, which most Americans are not comfortable doing in their own language much less Thai.
