Wee's/Elke's and Sirichai's come in in the mid-200s (the King Climber guidebook I opted not to pick up because it was my understanding from a number of other climbers that it was essentially a direct copy of an earlier edition of Wee's/Elke's, errors and all - so I have no hard supporting data for comparisons as with the other three; besides, I only had only so many bahts with which to buy guidebooks!). Sirichai's black and rad-like photo cover guide cuts right to the point: after about 20 pages of "fluff", his book breaks right into topos and listings of routes. There are no route descriptions, however, anywhere. If you come to a tricky spot, you'll have to puzzle it out for yourself (and just go for the next bolt/sling). He does include some notes about rebolting of routes when and where known (at the time of his writing).

Wee's and Elke's black cover guide has a bit more up-front fluff for the traveling climber: about 40 pages worth. But from there the guide dives straight into topos and route listings, with a few routes having brief notes. The book is also sprinkled with a few more fluff pages and advertisements in the routes section.

Sam's book has a bright, spring/aqua-green cover, with a photo of a climber on a route in Dum's Kitchen. His guide spends the first five full chapters - 95 pages - on "fluff", before he begins covering the climbing in general. He goes into a lot of detail for the traveling climber, much of it invaluable for the first-time visitor to Thailand (but already some of it out of date, as is the bane of all guides - information goes out of date before the books hit the stands) (for example, there are easily twice as many bungalow operations in Tonsai than what Sam lists, perhaps even three times as many; good to know for when you arrive and find nothing available at the listed ones). Good reading material for the plane flight to Thailand. For someone who has been to Thailand a couple of times, much of the material is still helpful, esp if you have not had the opportunity to experience everything that Sam has. For those climbers who more or less live in Thailand during the Northern Hemisphere winter months, it is probably superfluous information. Unless you haven't been paying much attention to the culture or environment around you...

One bit of fluff that Sam's guide has which the other guides do not is a section of color photos. While these do not give more information of the climbing walls/routes, they nicely add to the atmosphere of the region, giving a taste of what you might get to see/experience while you are there.

Unlike Wee's/Elke's and Sirichai's, Sam uses primarily photos for his topos (the other guys use exclusively drawings). In some cases the photo topos are quite helpful. In other cases, especially when some of the pertinent details are lost to inconsequential details, or to flat lighting, the drawings of the other guides are a better help for finding routes. If all else fails, one can always ask someone nearby what they are on in order to help orient oneself to the cliffs one is about to climb.

Sam's guide gives more route information than either Wee's/Elke's or Sirichai's, more of what U.S. climbers might expect in a guidebook. Personally I like a route description rather than "just follow the bolts, for crying out loud!" Occasionally, however, he bails on route descriptions in favor of some background information on the route and you're left to either follow the topo, the bolts/slings, and/or the chalk marks to climb it.

As with any guide, not all of Sam's info is accurate or correct (for the 2006 season, increase all the prices - such as longtail rides or bungalow costs - by 10-20 percent). Some of these are just typos, but a few could prove serious. For example, if you arrive with just one 60-meter rope, you are unlikely to try jumping on "The Groove Tube" (or it's neighboring two climbs) without a second rope as Sam notes it is 35-meters tall. However, upon arriving at the base of the climb you'll likely note everyone easily lowers off (or top-ropes) these three routes with a single 60-meter rope. While not critical, had the typo been the other way around...

One of the most negative aspects of Sam's book is his disparaging and often upturned-nose position of most of the easier routes in the region. His guide discriminates against people who don't climb "hard" stuff. He leaves the reader with the impression that if you don't climb 6a or harder, there's really not much there for you to do (and he's not always kind to the 6a routes, either). One area in particular, Shadow Wall, Sam completely dumps on, and refuses to even mention what routes lie within. While Wee/Elke and Sirichai also mention it's not a very nice area, they at least give topos and list routes for the wall. Upon visiting, I found that yes, some routes there are not worth climbing, and yes, the area is most definitely not Dum's Kitchen or Thaiwand, but there are still routes that are perfectly fine to climb - especially for the climber who does NOT climb at the lofty 7a or harder! For the most part Sam treats routes easier than 6a as unworthy and you shouldn't bother (if he even mentions them at all). Sam seems to forget that many climbers, however, only climb at the level of 4s and 5s, and might squeak onto 6a's, but don't do harder routes. Prior to my trip to Thailand I had only Sam's book to go by, and had the VERY wrong impression my climbing time there would be short and brief (as I don't climb 6a/6b in general; however, grades are soft out there, and I was able to get on a number of 6a's and 6b's). Upon picking up Sirichai's and Wee's/Elke's guides, I quickly understood there are a number of moderate level routes the non-elite/non-hardcore climber can get on and still enjoy oneself. And so between those and the 6a's/6b's I climbed, I managed to squeeze in 7 full and enjoyable days of climbing, and still not touch everything I wanted to get on.

Sam does maintain a webpage for updates to the guide (http://www.thailandclimbingguide.com/). However, he does clarify that he will only consider feedback from other climbers on corrections/updates, and will "eventually" put up that he deems worthy. Something to keep in mind when checking for updates (or sending in feedback).

Overall, as a standalone book for the general climber, I would rate Sam's guide 3.5 on a scale of 1-5 (but Amazon doesn't do half-stars, so I rated it '4'). The saving grace is all the extra fluff. If you were to use it as a supplement to Sirichai's or Wee's/Elke's guide (or both), or you climb exclusively at 7a and harder, it's a 4.5.

Sam's guide for Thailand is very useful for the first time visitor with lots of information and stories on locations, getting around and local culture.

there are a few routes missing in this book by now and the layout can be a little frustrating at times, with photo maps that are not as accurate as I would like. It is generally well laid out and freindly to use.

Alot of my mates had the updated 2007 guide from wee's and this seemed more up to date, crag wise, but I found the information on Thailand, language tid bits and hints on how to get around etc, it was perfect for someone who hadn't visited Ton Sai before and didnt know what to expect.

Good background book, out of date guidebook - Jie Zhang - Clarksville, MD USA
I got this book and Wee Changrua/Elke Schmitz's "Rock Climbing in Thailand" (3rd ed, Dec 2005) guidebook. Sam's book is good in giving you background and route descriptions but it is hard sometimes to find climbs with his photos. Also some data is out of date. For example the Diamond Cave area, only 2-3 climbs go the full height of the wall to the roof but looking at Sam's book it looks like they all go to the roof. Wee's book is upto date on this. Also Wee has a new edition, availible in Railay and Tonsai with the newest info; such as Stalagasaurus losing it's defining stalactite.

Otherwise it's an ok book.

The art of making lacquer from China to Thailand. But over the centuries, the forms and techniques to make today typically Thai lacquerware, lacquer and crafts are flourishing industry in Thailand. Lacquerware is produced in Thailand Chiang Mai, the northern province.

The art of lacquer takes a lot of patience and time. We start with fine mesh woven bamboo or wood, carved or shaped on a lathe. First BaseCoating material is applied is known as wicker or wood Samuk. Samuk is nothing but burnt ashes paddy husks or ground clay, and mixed with black paint. Black lacquer is made from a tree that only grows in the hills of northern Thailand. The designs are then on the subject with two different methods. One thing is lai KUD while the other is called lai rot nam If the goal is to be in color, the method is used KUD lai. So you're interested in a family experience with a rural community in northern Thailand's hill tribes? Sounds good! Remember, do not you Login luxury hotel-like accommodations. Be prepared for rather basic accommodations without services too. Most likely your shower is very rudimentary and consist of a bucket of cold water running out on you and your toilet is the traditional Thai outhouse, which is deep on the ground and not on the level ofyourself, you must pay a bucket of water or two, cause flushing the toilet. Do not worry if you picked the right family, you get a room very rustic, but clean with a double function. Do you have any anticipation of style gourmet restaurant, but meals must be prepared, tasty and healthy. The ladies of the country, preparing the meals are likely to know the cooks and experienced in their culinary traditions. If you are a vegetarian, should be ablearound you.

Just a tip - If you are staying with local hill tribe - that is, Akha, Hmong, Lisu, Lahu, Karen or Mien, would not it hurt some of the history of research in advance of their culture.

While in Thailand I have no personal experience with one, if I had the opportunity to make mountains, a review of a relatively new family in about an hour's drive from Chiang Mai, the tourist center of Northern Thailand. The rooms were simple andsmall as expected but very clean and had a small porch with chairs, in addition to a small area in the room to create your own things.

The villagers grow tea and coffee is very close and many people in the community in agriculture and other animals have been committed. When reading the product in a gift shop in their community, I bought filled a special collar around the neck pillow with aromatic green tea. I live here in Thailand, and for almost two years. Many of my friends in America ask me more questions as: what to do and where should I stay. Let me see if I can help a bit. "After thinking about this, I'm likely to need more than one post. So here is the first one.

Centers would pretty much everything when you are alone or with family. There are some places in Thailand, where almost no one wants to take yourthe family. I would suggest that Pattaya is not a place to care for your family. Pattaya is almost but not quite, a single refuge. A lot of entertainment for adult audiences, go-go bar that is, with topless dancers sometimes nude, and a plethora of prostitutes. "Although the government of Thailand said there is not a prostitute." :-) I have a word said here that there are families on holiday in Pattaya. There are some entertainment for the family here, sailing, fishing, surfing, parasailing,etc., but overall it is largely adult audience.

I would recommend that the family is the best area, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Bangkok. These pages are geared more for the family. As with the hotels. If Google tips about hotels, hotel is more or less see end sector. Try googleing "cheap hotels". It is my opinion the Suhkumvit of Bangkok has more reasonable hotel rates, and it is easy to to bypass the part of thethe city. Especially in the vicinity of where Nana and Asoke. These two areas have easy access to the skytrain and subway overhead. There are a lot of shopping there, together with restaurants and Internet cafes. There are too many tourists in this area, but sometimes it's a good thing, because there is virtually no crime in this area, attacked the police frown on tourists in Thailand, and here we speak English quite well.

As for Chiang Maiin question, try to find a great hotel in the city center near the central square. It is close to everything, shops, night market, pubs, restaurants, tour guides, etc.

I'm not as familiar with Phuket, but we recommend you close to the beaches in Phuket Central.

The weather here in Thailand is always nice, if not always a bit "hot, even though the season, you can get a bit cool in the evening. Wear light clothing. Walking shorts, short T-shirts,comfortable walking shoes. You will probably not run much, so bring your favorite, comfortable shoes. Bring a light sweater or jacket for a few nights. Do not worry about getting enough, you can do whatever you want here, that goes with toiletries found. Not to pack, you can use soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, umbrellas, in fact, almost everything. So do not over pack. There are libraries in Suhkumvit abundance, so you can find all the cardsand travel guides.

I probably missed something, but will try to work on my next post.

Travel Chiang Rai and get off the beaten path

Chiang Rai is a popular destination for tourists seeking a 2 or 3 day trip from Chiang Mai and discover more of Thailand. To head off the beaten path (the direct route from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai), is a suggested route to 3 head to Chiang Mai 77 km north of Chiang Dao, one of the 25 districts of Chiang Mai and Chiang Dao mountain home the second place in the mountainsThailand. In earlier times this was a busy shopping area, where they were transported to and from Burma. Today it is popular with walkers and those who rely throughout the hustle and bustle of Chiang Mai without risk. The main attraction is Chiang Dao Cave at the foot of the mountain, exploration is open to a tunnel lighted street on foot. About 90 kilometers north of Chiang Dao Doi Angkhang lives.

Doi Angkhang largely unknownforeign tourists, but a popular tourist destination for Thai is a series of wild and mountainous border, which is on the edge of the border between Thailand and Burma. Thailand Atlas by Roadway Review

I found this map helpful during our visit to Thailand.

Atlas directions and city names are bilingual in Thai Script and English text. Bilingual city names were useful because some road signs were only in Thailand script. I also found it useful to ask for directions by pointing to the Thai Script on the map as most Thais don't read English.

Map was easy to read as the background was white. Points of interest, temples and waterfalls were marked with symbols.

Map scale is 1:1,000,000 scale.

Chasing the Dragon: Into the Heart of the Golden Triangle Review

Although Cox's journalistic adventure narrative begins slowly, mired in pretentious descriptions and glamorized, over-dramatized, Hunter S. Thompson wannabe-gonzo bragging, it soon settles into a much more sophisticated groove, bolstered by Cox's significant grasp of Burmese history, Southeast Asian politics, and obligatory willingness to mix with the locals, dabble in a few vices, and refreshingly steer clear of "ugly American" stereotypes and boorish behavior abroad. The meandering of the book, between wandering Thailand's red-light district, sharing the quest of obsessed American POW hunters, and a good deal of astute political analysis, can lose the reader a bit at times, but by the last hundred pages one is fully engrossed, engaged, and rooting for Khun Sa and his ragtag band of drug-financed outlaw good guy rebels, while booing and hissing the bureaucratic US officials who forego supporting the Shan, valiant enemies of the odious Burmese regime, because of our hypocritical and shortsighted "war" on drugs. Sadly, since Cox published this ambitious work, Khun Sa has given up his guns and his poppy fields, betrayed by his own Shan rebels beause of his half-Chinese ancestry and perceived greed, and the old man is now doing lucrative hotel/casino business deals with the Rangoon regime. Oh well, at least Cox got in one hell of a narrative description before this "drug lord" decided to call it quits. Anyway, the relevance of the Golden Triangle to the international smack trade is now fading away, as the Afghan Taliban find that they can endure their diplomatic isolation quite nicely, thank you, by flooding world heroin markets in the name of political Islam.

...Cox's book is a great historical, sociological, political and geographical lesson. He is not full of himself as another stated here ("lofty opinion of himself"), in fact modest; nor a bad writer - some sharper editing might be needed here and there, but so what? As a bordering-on-elderly adventuress, I found this book very, very interesting.

I just finished reading Cox's book, and while I heartily agree with the criticisms of his literary style (there is a reason that Cox writes for the Boston Herald rather than the Economist or Atlantic), I found parts of it to be very engaging, with only the second-to-last chapter being a disappointment. The epilogue in particular makes up for a lot of slow going towards the end of Cox's Shan State visit. While he attempts to keep the hero worship under control, Cox does not exhibit the maturity that a seasoned writer like William Shawcross does, nor is Cox as adventurous as he seems to believe; the current king of the hill among hardbitten, well-educated nightmare-travel journalists has to be Robert Kaplan, whose penchant for jumping into open graves ought to shame Cox. Wow. Talk about a peltering! Poor Chris Cox writes a good and entertaining book about his looney adventure in Thailand and Burma, and the critics go ballistic. The venom is astonishing!

Well, the fact is that Chasing The Dragon is a pretty interesting tale, and certainly offbeat considering that it begins with a private mission to find MIAs in SE Asia ... in 1994!

But its more than simply a whacky story. There's a goldmine of history on Burma and Thailand, and I think Cox is one of the few writers to have actually put recent (post-1950) Burmese politics into a coherent framework.

Along the way Cox gets his interview with Khun Sa (the crux of his journalistic mission), and that's quite a coup. But that he also has some adventures; takes Xanax to adjust to his 12-hour jet lag; and describes some of the seamier corners of Asia is not outside the scope of the story. That's the way that travel in Asia often is!

Ecotourists might be offended. There is too much here that doesn't work for that strict Puritanical mindset ("Porno tapes as a gift to Khun Sa! My God!"). The Spa Cheeva was in Chiang Mai, Thailand for some years. Six months ago they took a new, larger and more luxurious the site. The new facility has a garden and separate buildings, with treatment rooms. I checked the 10th Cheeva July 2010.

The whole experience went well. I was a nice reception, answer questions and I would like the service was welcomed. My first task was to choose a treatment. I chose aHot oil massage for one hour. The Cheeva uses a base of jojoba oil for massage. Jojoba oil is my favorite, both the receipt and the delivery of massage. It is indeed a foreign instead of oil. As such it will never go rancid. It also has an excellent glide massage. Jojoba is also chemically very close to human skin oil. This makes it an excellent skin and hair moisturizer and rejuvenator.

The Cheeva began his treatments with a floral foot bath of milk. This is followed by aSalt scrub for the feet short. I was then taken to an adjacent building with a large treatment room. There were two massage beds and a bathroom very large. It seems all the furniture and equipment is new.

The woman doing the massage has been called Daeng, and she said she did massage for six years. His massage was really good. Tempo and rhythm are important qualities in any good massage and it was right on. His blood pressure was right, sometimes approachingAdd to my upper limits of comfort, but not to exceed.

After the massage I was given a cup of hot ginger tea while I basked in my state of pleasant relaxation.

Not recommended. I wanted a dense book to take with me to Thailand that would allow me to identify a fair number of birds, plants, insects, etc. However, the number of plants in this book is too small to be helpful and the illustrations aren't a good substitute for photographs. It would be better to get a plant book, a bird book, etc. and just carry around half a dozen books, which I eventually did, having not successfully identified more than 1 bird, using this book.

Let's Go Thailand 3rd Edition Review

Normally, I would have bought Lonely Planet, but their Thailand book was almost 3 years old, so I went with the more recently published Let's Go. I have never been a fan of Let's Go, but was surprised by how useful this book turned out. It's coverage of the country is less inclusive than Lonely Planet, so it is only really useful for short-term touring of the country. My trip was only 2 weeks long, which was fine for this book. It is printed on very lightweight paper, so the book itself is probably half the weight of the LP guidebook.

While Lonely Planet remains the best source for encyclopedic information such as population sizes for cities, it rarely provides very much opinion. This Let's Go book filled in that gap, providing frank, fair critiques of the various places to travel in Thailand. This helped me figure out if a particular place was worth going to. It was particularily good at steering me away from places that were overly developed or catered too much to the package Luxury tour crowd.

Even if you end up getting Lonely Planet, I still think the Let's Go Thailand book is cheap enough (and lightweight enough) that it is worth taking along as a second opinion.

I generally take at least two guides when going on a trip to a place I don't know anything about. For Southeast Asia, Lonely Planet is a necessity. However, I like Let's Go too - and it's nice to have a different perspective on things and places. And they sometimes fill in each others' gaps in information.

I got this book to find out about budget options during my trip to Thailand. While it's a good starting place and has a good overview of some of the main tourist attractions/activities, we found that the maps and codes were incorrect (sometimes even addresses), so I do NOT recommend using it for details. It was very frustrating! You would be better off taking a different book to Thailand. Hopefully these inaccuracies will be fixed in the 4th edition.

These alternatives to hotel or resort accommodation often offer exceptional quality and high standards, but a number of very second rate properties are also broadly advertised on the internet and in some cases offer no more than a room in a tired condominium in a poor location: it is important for the holidaymaker to know how to find an appropriate villa, and to understand the pricing structures generally in place, in order to be sure of securing an enjoyable, clean and properly serviced villa at the right price.

It is perfectly possible to rent your own villa in Thailand for your holiday and to enjoy not only superior accommodation, but also a plethora of services, at rates that in fact make such a holiday the sensible alternative to booking a room - or indeed, for those with friends and family, a number of rooms - in a resort.

Why Thailand?

Thailand is a perfect destination for those who wish to rent their own house or villa, for a number of reasons:

- the Thais are widely recognized as a welcoming, smiling people

Thailand is generally divided into four main regions.

Bangkok and the central Plains

Bangkok is a sprawling metropolis which, despite its famous gridlocked traffic and teeming streets, offers a great variety of things to do and to discover, to those with patience and a will to explore. The restaurants in Bangkok are second to none, whether you seek Thai or foreign cuisines, and its weekend and other markets deserve to be explored, as do many of its lesser know temples. A cruise on the Chaophraya river - perhaps by privately chartered long-tail boat - is an excellent way of seeing much of the city without being reduced to tears by the traffic.

The North

The North of the country is home to cities such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son. With tropical jungles and hills, the North attracts those looking to go trekking or seek out places of natural beauty. Do try to avoid the larger cities, as tourism is so developed here that you run the risk of simply being "processed" through a number of popular elephant camps and well-trodden hill tribe treks...

The Northeast

The Northeast is the largest region of the kingdom, yet has been largely untouched by tourism. The Northeast (or isan) is the rice-bowl of the country, and is predominantly agricultural, producing rice, sugarcane, tapioca, eucalyptus and, increasingly, rubber. Major centres include Khon Kaen and Udon Thani, and the mighty Mekong river twists along this region's borders. The people here are perhaps the most open and fun-loving in the country, perhaps because their lives are based on village traditions where overt consumerism has been much slower to advance than in the other booming parts of the nation. Travel to the Northeast is recommended for those looking for a unique experience, to get away from the tourist crowds, and to immerse themselves in something new.

The South

The south of Thailand is renowned for its famous beaches and seaside resorts, such as Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui. Some of the country's most expensive holiday villas are found here. Travellers should be aware of the security issues in the south of the country and avoid journeys to the southernmost provinces: your local government's website will post updated advisories with travel recommendations and warnings.

The vacation villa market

Holiday villas in Thailand tend to fall into one of two categories. They are either privately owned, self-contained homes, or villa units forming part of a resort complex. These are quite different propositions!

Resort Villas

The resort-centred villa essentially comprises a resort's superior room inventory, and will be priced accordingly. In many cases, these villas will have been professionally designed by the hotel designer itself, and then sold to a third party buyer, who in turn joins the letting pool operated by the developer to provide a return on investment on the villa buyer's acquisition.

The advantage here is that the villa occupants will generally be able to avail themselves of the additional facilities or services provided by the resort, albeit at resort prices. The disadvantage is that, for those seeking a more genuine experience, they will find themselves simply a guests within a resort complex, and considered as additional - if well-paying "keys".

Private stand-alone villas

Private villas are generally second homes owned by individuals, located on an individually-held land plot.

These may be rented "as is", with the guests picking up the keys at the start of the trip and returning them at the end, either with or without a cleaning or security deposit. Alternatively, the villa may have its own staff, generally living off property but available throughout your stay to take care of cleaning, laundry, cooking or local visits etc.

Whether you choose a resort villa or privately held property, you should expect to pay a partial deposit at the time of booking, either by credit card guarantee or by a wire transfer.

Tried and Tested

We tried a number of villa vacations in Thailand, and below highlight one resort villa and one private villa - each offering an exceptional holiday but altogether different experiences.

Green Gecko, Northeast Thailand

Green Gecko is a privately owned villa located on a large country estate, surrounded by woodlands, plantations and rice paddies in the heart of Thailand's rural northeast, near a town called Udon Thani. Free airport transfers were arranged from the airport, which is accessible via a 50 minute flight from Bangkok on Thai Airways, or budget airlines Nok Air or Air Asia.

In contrast to more mainstream locations, our stay here allowed us to discover and experience the real Thailand, off the beaten tourist track.

The villa's architecture was traditionally Thai: an impressive wooden staircase led up to the raised and enclosed wooden deck, where our delightful private swimming pool was located, with bucolic views of the surrounding countryside and the evening sunsets. The steeply pitched roofs made of terracotta tiles gave the house an almost temple like appearance. A raised and covered "sala" here offered protection from the strong midday sun and became our favourite spot, with its views over the pool.

Accessible from the deck in two separate buildings were the two bedrooms (each air-conditioned), as well as the living and dining room and kitchens. The master bedroom had a sturdy teak four-poster, king sized bed, with a cotton duvet and feather pillows, a large adjoining bathroom and WC and an outside garden shower. The second bedroom had a queen sized four poster, again with a spacious adjoining bathroom / WC.

The main air-conditioned building housed a dining room with a dining table and seating for six, a living room with comfortable sofas and views onto the pool deck, and a sunken area decorated with futons for lounging in front of the large screen LCD television (complete with a separate high-end home theatre system and international satellite channels). Leading off from this area (behind sliding wooden panels) was an additional WC, and a fully equipped Western kitchen (with built in microwave, oven etc), that in turn led out to a stainless steel Thai kitchen.

We must confess that this all looked very user-friendly, but that we never used the kitchens - with the exception of helping ourselves to a few iced beers from the refrigerator! As the owner is a former chef, he prepares all his guests' meals throughout their stay, varying the spiciness or composition of these to his guests' tastes. We were delighted to be shown around the gardens to collect a number of herbs and spices, which we were then shown how to spirit into deliciously fresh and tangy Northeastern dishes. We tried the classics too: Thai food certainly is mouth-watering, and staying at a villa like this where all meals are prepared for you, by a chef who is willing to share his secrets, was a boon!

We spent a good deal of time just lazing by the pool in complete privacy, but also enjoyed a number of excursions with our hosts to experience some of the sights and sounds of the Northeast. These included a spectacular trip in a small wooden boat, across a lake that was fundamentally a vast expanse of pink lotus flowers, interrupted only by the occasional fisherman or wallowing water buffalo (marriage propositioners, take note!) We also visited a local museum that seemed to denominate Thailand as the home of the bronze age, and a number of rowdy, colourful local festivals and wet markets, as well as silk and cobra farms. But our lasting impression was one of rural simplicity and ever-friendly locals, keen to ensure we enjoyed our stay and sample an unending variety of indigenous foods and drinks!

The Villas at Napasai, Southern Thailand

The villas at Napasai are located within the seafront resort complex on the luxury North coast of the island of Koh Samui, in Thailand's southern province of Surat Thani. Koh Samui is accessible via Bangkok Airways from Bangkok, with flights taking approximately one hour (depending or aircraft chosen).

The resort is part of Orient-Express Hotels, Trains and Cruises: as such, both the villa and the resort were professionally managed, and we were able to choose between cooking up our own Thai meals after a visit to the local markets, or to simply walk to the resort's excellent Thai restaurant in the evening.

The villas themselves were located at one end of the property, stunningly sandwiched between a steep hillside behind our house and the sea in front. Each of the villas is tiered down the hillside to the seafront. We stayed in a two bedroom villa, but three bedroom properties were also available. Beyond the two well-appointed bedrooms, our property had a spacious living and dining room with its own kitchen, a maid's room, and, at the ground level, a private swimming pool and "chill-out" area. The main living room was well furnished and had a DVD player, satellite TV, and charming sea view balcony, where we spent most evenings.

The island of Koh Samui is a major international tourism hub and as such plenty of activities are available for the guest, from exploring waterfalls, to elephant rides, paintball, sea sports, diving, fishing, golf etc. The hotel also offers boating activities, Thai cooking classes, tennis courts, a fitness centre and a spa.

We booked online at the hotel's own internet site, taking advantage of a special offer. Rates for a two bedroom villa are seasonal and start at around US$850 per night, including complimentary American breakfast.

Finding your Thai Villa on the internet

Choosing an appropriate holiday villa on the internet is easy using Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. Remember:

- Play with your search terms: use more specific words to help you drill down to receive a more "targeted" property. "Rural villa with pool Thailand" or "seafront Samui private villa" will give a more specific set of results than will the generic "Thailand Villa", and will be less likely to return a listings site.

- Where possible, book directly with the property owner rather than via a listings site - in all likelihood such a listings site will be charging a commission on top of the normal rate.

- Don't be afraid to ask for references.

- Travel in the off season, and book early. Book ahead, as when a standalone villa is booked - it is booked!

- Make sure the property you choose has a telephone and address listed.

- Travel somewhere different! What makes a stay in a private villa memorable is the way it can take you out of the tourist centres to enjoy a more authentic holiday.

Thailand's Airlines

Thailand's flag carrier offers numerous domestic flights, but travelers "in the know" will turn to the local discount airlines. These offer frequent flights at a fraction of the price and in relative comfort. Try Nok Air or Air Asia. Koh Samui is served by the "boutique airline" Bangkok Air.

How to Make Car Travel Fun

Each year, families jump into their cars and head off on a road trip vacation. Within
minutes the kids start getting bored riding in the car and you are left with the
headache of trying to make their travel experience fun before they start to pick on
each other.

Here are some suggestions to keep your ride fun, peaceful and the ever dreaded
question of "are we there yet?".

1. Play the alphabet game. - Children at reading age and above can play this game.
There are a few variations for this game. Starting with the first letter of the alphabet,
A - Find this letter on signs, billboards or license plates, but the word must start
with the letter A with a name like Applebees. Continue to the letter B for example: If
you drive past a Burger King restaurant, then you have your B, and can begin
looking for C. Of course you can make up the rules to your liking depending on the
age of your children. The key is that you must find these letters in sequence.

2. Another variation of the alphabet game will work for younger kids by finding
objects which start with each letter in the Alphabet. If you drive past a red barn, you
could probably claim either an R (red) or a B (barn), depending on which letter you
need next.

3. Play Card Games. There are many easy games which do not require all too much
space such as uno or war. A few travel games can pass by time and keep the kids
happy while you take a break from the action.

4. Play the I SPY game. I spy something green and it's outside (as opposed to inside
the car). Riders take turns looking outside for something that might be the color
green. Chances are the object will pass quickly, so you will have to be alert and act
quickly. This is a great game to have your kids think as well as keep them busy and
aware of their surroundings.

5. Have the kids watch a movie or play their own travel game. The kids will be
occupied and probably glued to their own entertainment.

Don't forget to take a break. Although stopping does not get you quickly to your
destination, it is important to take at least one stop along the way. Stretch breaks as
well as blatter relief should not go neglected as they are important for your bodies
well being. By getting some fresh air along the way, your road trips will be much
more enjoyable for everyone.

Over one million tourists a year visit the Thai province of Nakhon Nayok. Remarkably, 95% of them are Thai.

If you ask westerners to name tourist destinations in Thailand, most would list the famous beach resorts such as Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui. Lonely Planet Thailand's Islands & Beaches (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) Review

I got a lot of use out of the book and made 2 trips to Thailand on it. I went to Koh Chang, and the information was a great help in helping me plan when to go, what to do, how to get there and everything. It especially helped in Bangkok, which is needed as this is a place where you don't want to seem lost, it is overwhelming. One thing that I would add to this book, When you come out of the last gate at the airport, there will be very many people standing there, waiting for the tourists. Don't look at them!!!! As soon as you make eye contact, they will be on you like white on rice ready to find anything that you might need, just to get some kind of commission. I did a lot of research about a month or two both with this book as well as the internet (check out lonely planet's site, as well as other web queries), so it helps to not get there and open the book for the first time. If you want to go to Phuket or Koh Samui or some other tourist trap, you don't really need a book, but this book might tell you some insider's tips that you might not find just by showing up and waiting to be ripped off. One other thing, about flights, join a courier orgnaization. It will save you A LOT of money and you will only have to sacrifice some baggage space. Another thing, if you decide to go to the tropical spots, best time is the 1st of October. This is the beginning of tourist season, although it doesn't pick up for another month, so you can still do everything without the crowds present yet. One last thing: GO TO KOH CHANG!! It is the best!! This book is to me considered to be a necessary item for travel (Lonely Planet always is!).

Marketed For Whom? - K. Johnson - US/Asia
This edition has plenty of information that is helpful. One can get enough information before going, upon arrival, or after arriving on where to explore without this book, however. The Lonely Planet Thailand guidebook (for the entire country and not just the islands and beaches) also has plenty of information on Thailand's islands and beaches.

With the inclusion of "luxury" accommodation and over-priced "tourist" restaurants and trinket shops, it appears this book is marketed towards a particular group: North Americans who only have two-weeks, and therefore need to "plan" ahead for their trip. This is a particular market and that is understandable, but it appears that LP is trying to get a piece of this market, and gear this guide-book towards these type of folks.

One thing to note: Ko Chang is not off the beaten track by any means. It's going to be the next place completely destroyed by the Tourist Authority of Thailand. They are working on it right now, evicting local Thais who've lived there for generations to build hotels.

There is no where in S.E. Asia that is "off the beaten" track, except perhaps, parts of Laos. The trail is crowded, and continues to get bigger. If you're a long-term visitor or a "two-week hoteller" then this book will due.

Information covered in other travel guides - -
I just returned from a trip to Thailand. I was in Bangkok, Phuket and some of the outlying islands. There is nothing in this book that is not covered in the other general Thailand Guides. I would even go so far to say the Rough Guides Thailand has more comprehensive information about places to stay and things to do near the beaches. Also, something I didn't know, Thailand has a great tourism service provided in the Airport in Bangkok that can book most anything you need for stay on the beaches (if you are going to Phuket). It was a great trip even if I did have to lug this junky book around with me the whole time!

Poorly organized book with abundant misinformation - -
I purchased this book thinking that it would be the definitive text on the islands of Thailand. I could not have been more wrong. Lonely Planet's misinformation on the weather patterns (specifically monsoons typical locations at different times of the year) resulted in my being stranded on an island in a monsoon. Other guide books including the rough guide to thailand as well as my German and Irish colleagues books provided accurate information which frequently disagreed with the information in this book. I also found that the rough guide to Thailand provided more complete and accurate information on the islands. Overall I would not recommend this book to anyone- better luck next time to the authors.

So hands up all those that thought that men were the only ones that could sweep women off their feet? Well you are wrong I'm afraid, there are lots of women that are doing it to their loved ones too and it is far more romantic than your standard box of chocolates or bunch of flowers ideas that he seems to come up with.

For starters some of the women have arranged an impromptu break away for their love ones.

With the ease of doing all of the booking online it is a very straight forward and easy way to go about this. All of the arrangements from flight to hotel bookings are made via the internet. This just leaves the women to somehow get their guy to turn up at a specified time.

Now let's face it, who would not turn up for n unscheduled break away from it all with their loved one? I think this may be a very easy way to sweep the guy off his feet; it would certainly work with me! But I you find that either you or your guy cannot get the time off then there are other ways.

Some women have taken their guys out to Karaoke evenings at their local bar and then decided to get up to sing and dedicate a song to him. Now that's one way to make him feel special. You could even book a small private auditorium and do a live performance with the assistance of some backing singers.

A very simple but equally effective way to get his attention is to leave little notes all over the house by using the post it's.

It may not be the most inventive way of doing things but it certainly works. The trick is to leave them in some places where he would least expect to see them as this would make him even more surprised.

So guys, you must agree that these few examples are a little bit more creative ways to sweep the loved ones off their feet! It just goes to show that a little ingenuity can go a long way.

Travel Overview of Northern Thailand - Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son

Northern Thailand is a mountainous part of the country which borders Myanmar and Laos, characterized by its rugged terrain and mix of peoples such as mainland Thais, Burmese, Shan and hilltribe groups (Karen,Hmong,Lahu,Lisu and Akha). These characteristics give Northern Thailand a culture and feel about it that is very different to the rest of Thailand.

The second biggest city in Thailand and the capital of the North, Chiang Mai attracts thousands of tourists every year. A city of old and new, where east meets west, it guarantees something for everybody. Some say Chiang Mai has everything Bangkok has to offer except on a much smaller and quieter scale. Most people allow a few days in Chiang Mai but one could easily spend a week soaking up the sights and sounds and falling for the allure of this city.

For those looking to explore more of Northern Thailand past the environs of Chiang Mai, there are two popular options. One is to head directly north to Chiang Rai or west to Mae Hong Son. Chiang Rai can be comfortably explored in 3 days covering destinations such as Fang, Thaton and Mae Salong. Most people set aside 3 days or less to discover Chiang Rai, although some make Chiang Rai a day trip- this is not recommended as most of the day is spent traveling as it is a good 4 hours drive from Chiang Mai.

With 3 days/2 nights a recommended route which covers both tourist and non tourist areas is; Chiang Mai - Chiang Dao - Doi Angkhang - Fang -Thaton - Mae Salong -Mae Sai- Golden Triangle - Chiang Rai - Chiang Mai. This route covers some beautiful natural scenery such as paddy fields, farmland growing a variety of crops, mountain backdrops and hilltribes. This route gets off the main tourist trail, the direct road from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai that many commercial tour operators take to visit tourist hot spots such as the Golden Triangle and Mae Sai border.

For those with 4 days or more on their hands Mae Hong Son province which lies west of Chiang Mai is highly recommended. Mae Hong Son has a more remote feel to it as more time is needed to navigate through this mountainous province it remains less chartered by tourists. Home to a mix of peoples such as the Burmese, Shan, hilltribes and Thais, another distinctive feature of Mae Hong Son is the Shan and Burmese influence not found anywhere else in Thailand. This can be seen through the architecture, where ornate Shan style temples are scattered throughout this province. This area is also famous for its mists, named the land of 3 mists due to the dewy mist in the winter, rainy mist in the wet season and mist from forest fires in the summer.

Mae Hong Son Province is best discovered by doing the Mae Hon Son Loop a famous 600km circuit which starts from Chiang Mai taking you through the towns of Pai, Mae Hong Son and Mae Sariang before ending back up at Chiang Mai. The circuit can be done in a clockwise direction stopping off at Mae Sariang first or anti-clockwise via Pai.

For the ultimate Northern Thailand experience with 10 days or more on your hands you could cover both Mae Hong Son and Chiang Rai. Starting off with the Mae Hong Son Loop then crossing over from Pai to Chiang Dao and up North to the Chiang Rai region.

Thailand is known as an eco-adventure destination by travelers since the seventies, when backpackers came across the jungle trek tours in the north of the kingdom. Thailand provides now a huge variety of eco adventure recreations in all parts of the country.

Treks are most popular in northern Thailand due to the beauty of nature. The Illuminated Night of Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong is conceived as a renowned festival in Thailand. The word "Loy" means to float and "Krathong" is a banana leaf cup made of natural materials such as a banana trunk, banana leaves and lotus petals. It is laden with a candle, incense sticks, flowers and coins to ensure an auspicious life. People will flock to the river and then make a wish before drifting their Krathong onto the river. The floating of Krathong is intended to banish all sufferings and ask for apologies to the Goddess of the River in contaminating her waters. Some believe that the ritual is meant to worship the Buddha's footprint on the bank of the Narmada River whilst others say that it is to pay respect to Phra Uppakhut, one of the Lord Buddha's great disciples.

The illuminated night of Loy Krathong comes with various entertaining activities. Thai people of all ages and from all walks of life can marvel at plenty of delightful activities after gliding their Krathong away. There are folk entertainments, light and sound presentations, dance parades, local product fairs as well as many other genres of traditional and cultural performances. The highlight of the festival will be the most beautiful Krathong contest and beauty pageant set in memory of "Nang Noppamas", a legendary woman in the Sukhothai period. Significantly, the lighting of fireworks is always done in the same spirit as when lighting candles in an act of worship. Firework displays have become a quintessential element of this vibrant festival.

The exact origin of Loy Krathong is supposed to begin more than 700 years ago in Sukhothai, the ancient capital of Thailand, when farmers held a lantern floating festival shortly after sowing seeds in their drenched paddy fields. One talented woman named Nang Noppamas or Thao Si Chulalak who resided in the palace of King Phra Ruang marvelously created special lanterns for this festival. Unlike other conventional lanterns, they were made of banana leaves devised in the shape of lotus petals. The lanterns so astounded the king that he commanded once a year on the full moon night a grand ceremony should be celebrated through floating lotus shaped banana leaf cups. This practice has been thoroughly upheld up to the modern day.

This year Loy Krathong is as always commemorated nationwide during 31 October - 6 November in a different manner especially in Sukhothai, Ayudhya, Chiang Mai, Tak and Bangkok. The theme of Loy Krathong accentuates Colorful Water-Loy Krathong Great Festival. Sukhothai, the site of origin of the festival, celebrates Loy Krathong and Candle Festival. The most interesting aspect of the festival is a light and sound show and the "Dawn of Happiness" activity that will be organized in the age-old setting of the Sukhothai Historical Park. Thailand is one beautiful country, full of mystery, intrigue, suspense and joy. Two years ago I decided to go there with 3 other friends and almost no idea what to expect. I have literally just "so" when she asked me if I would go, and really had no idea what their culture or country as was in everything. That is, I think to go there was the best I've ever done, and I'm so glad I decided to go, like the people I went with the brothersfor life and the experiences that we were there a legend.

So what is so good? There is a place in the north of Chiang Mai Thailand asked in where I went bungee-jumping to the north and go on a three-day hike in the hills. Then we are south towards the tip of the island of Ko Phangan Party. This place is famous for the legendary "Full Moon Party", the houses each month. The festival takes place on a beach with several DJs all the way and is instead21.00 bis 09.00 clock the following day.

Towards the end of our stay we visited a village east of Bangkok called Kanchanaburi. This site is home to the infamous "Death Railway", and the bridge over the Kwai River (which has a movie based). The place is a chilling reminder of the horrors of war, and there were many memorials and cemeteries in memory of those who tragically lost their lives. Although the experience was a bit "depressing, made me appreciate what I have now more, and finallyI'm glad I did.

Jennifer L. Smith has been one busy lady. Over the years she's traveled extensively and in Bamboo Byways she shares her experiences in Southeast Asia. As someone who loves to travel the back roads, I was pretty excited to see what she had to say about a part of the world I haven't made it to yet.

A few chapters in I realized that this book was not at all what I had anticipated. I didn't expect to learn so much about the traditions and history of whatever place I was being guided through. While that surely isn't a bad thing, it made for heavier reading that I had prepared myself for. One thing you can be sure of is that you will surely gain a breadth of knowledge about the people of Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, while learning about the daily struggles and triumphs of ordinary citizens.

In the forward, Smith discusses the importance of understand other cultures and then delivers a solid read that helped me to better understand a culture that is far removed from the world of sitcoms and fast food I grew up in. I especially enjoyed the story of Sanun, the rice farmer and have to admit I may never look at a bowl of rice the same way again!

I would recommend this book for people who are planning on visiting this region of the world. It's a great primer on the history told by a woman who surely knows the region well. If you're someone who's looking for a collection of feel good stories you can breeze through on the beach, this one might not be right for you!

Personally, I really enjoyed this brief glimpse into three countries I know very little about. While I had hoped for more of a travel narrative, I have to commend the author on her research and insight. While this surely isn't the book I anticipated, I definitely learned a ton.

What a disappointment... - Seamus Mckenna - Maha Sarakham, Thailand
After repeatedly trying to order the electronic version of this book on the author's website and having emailed the author at his listed address without a response, I opted for making a purchase of the hard copy on Amazon. This is not an inexpensive item and with shipping included the total cost came to about . Still, I thought it would be a worthwhile book to have.

I could not have been more wrong. What I received was a photocopy, yes a photocopy of what I assume to be the original book and not a good photocopy either. Most of the Thai script is so small it is barely legible and many pages can hardly be opened due to the crude stapling effort. I could not believe what I had received from Amazon as a 'new book'. Someone in the Quality Control department needs to take a look at this and return whatever is in stock to the author, if you can find him, that is.

As for the contents, it's more or less what was advertised, although the addition of a number of not-very-amusing cartoons by the author leaves one wondering why they were included at all. Also, notice how the cover image shows "700 Thai Words..." while the title is "600 Thai Words...". There's something really unprofessional about this whole enterprise.
